Satyajit Ray, India's most revered director, made a film a year between 1956 and 1981, and there are masterworks galore in Lincoln Center's "Long Shadows: The Late Work of Satyajit Ray." In this era of his career, Ray homed in on the collision between rigid and self-serving ideology and the freedom of the individual, the cerebral spilling over into the sensuous. He returned to the Bengali setting of his Apu trilogy for Distant Thunder (pictured), portraying the impact of a horrific man-made famine on a village through the most intimate lens imaginable. His affinity for Ibsen produced not only an adaptation of An Enemy of the People but the brilliant The Home and the World, with its portrait of a destructive nationalist and the woman he brings down. On a giddier note, two films also feature Ray's Holmesian private investigaor Feluda, about whom he wrote 35 short stories.
