Composer Darcy James Argue started this sprawling eighteen-piece "steampunk" big band as a radical thought experiment, envisioning jazz and pop music in conversation. "What if every time you turned on the radio, everyone from T-Pain to Rihanna to Katy Perry was backed by a big band?" he once playfully asked. Since 2005, the group has played exclusively the music of its maestro, but this Thursday Argue hands his band to other composers: Nicole Lizée, David T. Little, and Vijay Iyer. But he hasn't completely turned over his composer's pen: The eight-piece ensemble Newspeak will open the concert with the premiere of Argue's new song cycle "The Sleep Room," based on Cold War–era subliminal mind-control experiments that took place at a Montreal hospital.
