Pacino's 70s

"Pacino's 70s" is a one-week festival at Film Forum highlighting the first decade of Al Pacino's screen career—which, if I were bitchy, I'd subtitle "When He Was Great." Okay, he has been brilliant since, but always high on the hog, which isn't the case in his breakthrough as Michael in The Godfather and its first sequel—internal, amazingly controlled performances. You can also savor his greatest work, as the driven, depressive bank robber in Dog Day Afternoon. The rarity is Scarecrow (pictured), a casual, intimate 1973 drama in which Pacino and fellow Method titan Gene Hackman play Beckettian hobos traveling cross-country to open a car wash. On February 24, the 7:40 screening will be introduced by director Jerry Schatzberg—who also directed Pacino in his film as a junkie in The Panic in Needle Park, which screens February 21.
