Some in the audience will be hoping to explore strange new cinematic realms, others to increase their office-betting-pool odds—but everyone agrees it's great to be able to see all fifteen Oscar-nominated short films (animation, live action, and documentary) in one go. Docs have never been included before, and, at press time, haven't been previewed. The ten others this year are pretty mainstream. The U.K.'s live-action The Confession (the Catholic boys need something to confess to, and do something ghastly) is remarkably upsetting, whereas Na Wewe (Hutu soldiers in Burundi stop a van and try to separate out Tutsis for killing) goes down almost too easily for its nightmarish subject. As for the animation, it's all kid-friendly: Pixar's widely seen Night and Day is a charmer, but the heartwarming The Lost Thing (pictured), in which a boy finds a giant whatsit with no conceivable function, is the real find. Place your bets.
