This nerd-jazz supergroup of saxophonist Steve Lehman (a doctoral candidate), drummer Tyshawn Sorey (a master's student), and pianist Vijay Iyer, Ph.D., can geek out on concepts like the "aspects of rhythm perception and cognition" (Iyer's dissertation subject). Each is an accomplished band-leaders in his own right, and together they play textured, tightly woven music that burns with visceral intensity. If you miss them tonight (they're heading out of town tomorrow for a three-night Composer Portrait series sponsored by the Ars Nova Workshop in Philadelphia), you can catch Iyer in town again with another trio, Tirtha, with guitarist Prasanna and Nitin Mitta on the tabla, at the Asia Society April 1 and 2.
