Neil Cuthbert's White People is a barbed dramedy based loosely on his seventies upbringing in a pasty New Jersey suburb: Take The Ice Storm down a tax bracket or two, add one-liners, and you're nearly there. Shell-shocked Dad (James DeMarse) has started drinking again, and Mom (Cecilia DeWolf) is grappling with her own mother (Delphi Harrington), a Republican who dispenses amateur ethnology. ("The Greeks were the first white people. Of course, they got darker over the years.") All three twentysomething kids live at home, subsisting on Excedrin and Ding Dongs. Cuthbert isn't breaking a lot of new ground here, but he's written a highly diverting, fond if not exactly forgiving family portrait. It'll make you forget that he wrote The Adventures of Pluto Nash.
