Modern music was born in Hungary, where Haydn spent most of his career, busily inventing the symphony and the string quartet. A century and a half later, another Hungarian, Béla Bartók, arrived in New York, believing that the old world was dying in the flames of World War II. It didn't quite, as the genius of Bartók's countryman and successor, György Ligeti, attests. This week and next, you can hear them all, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen, in the New York Philharmonic's "Hungarian Echoes."
