Somehow, the folks at Film Forum have figured out how to follow the Thai tone poem Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives with a film that is even slower: Michelangelo Frammartino's Le Quattro Volte ("the four times"). But this one's anything but funereal. Set in a stone village in Calabria, it's a wordless, deadpan, dryly amusing musing on the disharmony of ancient and modern, of human industry and nature. No, "disharmony" isn't right—it's more a sort of disharmonious harmony, underscored by cowbells, goat bells, church bells, wind chimes, and the barking of one high-strung canine. A funeral procession rounds the bend, a slippery kid (i.e., baby goat) plops from its mother's womb ... When and if you adapt to its rhythms, you'll find yourself sighing and giggling in the damnedest places, almost feeling the breezes on your skin.
