John Zorn, the tightly wound saxophonist, staggeringly prolific composer and record producer, jazz impresario, and standard-bearer of the Jewish avant-garde, plays an outsize role in New York City Opera's spring season. On March 25, the company stages La machine de l'être, a wordless improvisational monodrama based on drawings by Antonin Artaud, along with companion pieces by Schoenberg and Morton Feldman. Then, on March 30, Zorn hosts "Masada Marathon," an opera-length concert centered on his multivolume Book of Angels, for which he cranked out more than 300 short, wild pieces in three high-octane months.
