Some years, it's one revelation after another; others it's a slog. But the 40th anniversary of "New Directors/New Film" is the perfect time to say, "Hey, we love you, you not-ready-for-prime-time New York Film Festival—'cause sometimes you're the best one of all." This year, you can go for more mainstream American fare on opening night, with J.C. Chandor's 24-hours-on-the-trading-floor drama Margin Call (starring Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, and Demi Moore), or Iranian lesbians on closing night, with Maryam Kesavarz's Circumstance. For something in between (artistically and geographically), try actor Paddy Considine's directorial debut, Tyrannosaur, about a lonely, violent drunk—based, affectionately, on his dad.
